Water & Sewer Services
An application for water and/or sewer service must be completed and submitted to the Water Department located in the Mebane Municipal Building.

Deposits are required for all connections (including sprinkler taps) to the City's water and/or sewer service and are as follows:
INSIDE CITY LIMITS
- Water Service, $75.00 Sewer Service, $75.00
OUTSIDE CITY LIMITS
- Water Service, $150.00 Sewer Service, $150.00

Customers having problems with water or sewer can call the Public Works building between 8-5 Monday through Friday at (919) 563-3401. Call (919) 563-5901 with questions about your water and sewer bill. For emergencies after hours, on holidays or weekends call (919) 563-9031.

Garbage and Recycling Services
Garbage service is available to all residents within the Mebane City limits. The pickup day is determined by the side of town you live on, using the railroad as the divider line.

The garbage pickup begins at 6 a.m. on the following days:

Monday:
Garbage picked up at all addresses located south of the RR tracks and east of S. Fifth Street.

Tuesday:
Garbage picked up at all addresses located north of the RR tracks and west of N. Fifth Street.

Thursday:
Garbage picked up at all addresses located south of the RR tracks and west of S. Fifth Street including Collington Farms.

Friday:
Garbage picked up at all addresses located north of the RR tracks and east of N. Fifth Street.


Downtown businesses will have garbage service on Mondays and Thursdays starting at 10 a.m.

The city provides a 95 gallon container to each residential unit at no cost. Each container will be numbered and assigned to a specific address. Containers are the property of the City and should not be defaced. House numbers, street names and residents’ name shall not be painted on the carts. Place household garbage in tied plastic bags or paper bags. Place bags into the container making sure nothing hangs down the side. Close the lid. Place containers curb side no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day. The collection truck must have access to you container. Place it three feet away from trees, mailboxes, parked cars, utility lines or anything else that could hinder the collection. Place the container within two feet of the curb. The collection truck is on a scheduled route. It is difficult for the truck to return to your address if your garbage is missed because it was not put out correctly or was put out late. Place containers at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day. Remove your empty container from the curb by midnight on the day of collection. Containers should not be left on the curb during weekends. Your co-operation in abiding by this requirement helps keep the City of Mebane beautiful.

Recycling Glass Products

Food & Beverage
All colors, shapes, and sizes.
Lids/caps must be removed.
Containers must be rinsed, clean and dry.
Labels don't have to be removed.

Recycling Plastic Products
PETE & HSPE Plastic
Look for the code or the on the bottom of the bottle.
Lids/tops must be removed and plastics should be clean and dry.
Labels don't have to be removed.
Plastic bags are not acceptable.
Motor oil and antifreeze containers are not acceptable.

Recycling Glass Products

Cardboard
All colors and type of un-waxed and uncoated corrugated cardboard.
All cardboard must be clean and dry.

  • Shipping cartons
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Furniture boxes
  • Stereo boxes

Newspapers
Examples of such items are daily newspapers, national tabloids, and local tabloids. All newspaper must be clean.

Recycling Glass Products

Aluminum Cans
All aluminum beverage cans.
Cans must be clean and dry.

Steel Cans
All steel (tin) beverage and food cans.
Examples of these items are soup, fruit, vegetable, juice.

Cans must be clean and dry.
Labels do not need to be removed.
Do not place detached steel lids in recycling container.

Not Acceptable

Magazines: Examples include catalogs, junk mail, and phone books.
Aerosol Cans

Chip Board: Examples include cereal, cracker, cake mix, flour, and pizza boxes.

Yard waste is collected on alternating Wednesdays. (Note: No one part of town is covered on a particular Wednesday, so the number of weeks between yard waste pick up will vary). Acceptable for collection are grass trimmings, leaves, garden trimmings and brush. These items must be places in a permanent, reusable can or other receptacle to be provided by the customer. Disposable plastic bags or other disposable containers are acceptable and will be serviced. Small brush items must be cut to a length not to exceed 5 feet and tied in bundles not to exceed 50 pounds. Yard waste should be placed at the curb next to, but separate from other household garbage and recycling. Large quantities of brush will be collected at the earliest convenience. Please note that yard waste should be placed at the curb and not in the street.

Bulky items such as appliances will be collected only if you call the Public Works Department at (919) 563-3401. The City does not collect debris from building or contract work, tires, shingles, concrete, masonry, rocks, dirt, stumps, logs, hazardous chemicals, paint, or sealed containers. For Disposal of these items contact the Alamance County landfill at (336) 376-8902.

Billing for Services
Water and sewer accounts are due in full upon receipt of monthly billings. Those accounts which have not been paid in full by the next billing cycle shall incur a late charge of $10.00, which shall be added to the bill. If all charges, including late fees, are not paid in full within twenty (20) days of the second billing, water service will be discontinued without further notice. Service will only be reinstated upon payment of all outstanding sums (including late fees) and a reconnection fee of $25.00 (M-F, 8am-5pm) or $50.00 (after 5pm on cut off day).

For those accounts which have service discontinued twice within a 24-month period, reconnection shall not be allowed until the customer posts an additional deposit equal to one and one-half of average monthly charges.

Customers are reminded that no additional notices of pending cutoff will be made. If a customer has special circumstances requiring extended payment options, he/she should contact the City Manager.

The office of the Water Department is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, is located in the Mebane Municipal Building at 106 East Washington Street, Mebane, NC 27302 and can be reached by phone at (919) 563-5901.
